Corrosion of steel reinforcement greatly reduces the strength of RCC members. Weak RCC members weaken the building.
Epoxy coating is an efficient way to prevent corrosion of steel reinforcement. One of the best types of epoxy I recommend is Coal Tar Epoxy coating.
What is Epoxy Coating?
Epoxy is a type of synthetic material used on steel surfaces that prevents contact with corrosive agents as moisture and chemicals and also provides a certain degree of scratch resistance
Some manufacturers, such as PSL and IN TMT, offer pre-coated epoxy steel reinforcement to their customers and markets.
Although the epoxy method is widely used around the world, it still has some drawbacks.
- Steel cutting process and improper handling of steel can cause damage to the epoxy coating. This creates zones of anode and cathode within the steel reinforcement and cause corrosion.
- Epoxy coating might slightly decrease the bonding between steel and concrete.
New Anti-Corrosive Coal Tar Based Epoxy Coating
The newly introduced anti-corrosion coal tar epoxy coating effectively combats the above defects and gives us low cost, environmentally friendly results.
Some advantages of the newly introduced tar based epoxy are..
- They are brush type coatings or airless spray coatings, so they are easy to apply.
- They do not require a high temperature for curing.
- They can be applied after placing of the bars or after cutting of bars.
- They increase the bond between steel rebar and concrete.
- They are cost-effective and environmentally friendly
- They are suitable for all type of bars, steel grills, steel tanks and other types of steel.
