Room size, Directional Placement as per Vastu Sastra & Engineering

Vastra Shastra is an excellent tool for the building planning process. By following the given Vastu Shastra and Engineering recommendations for room size, orientation and window size, anyone can bring positivity, productivity and good energy into their home.

Vastu Shastra is a scientific method based on the activities of the occupants, the position of the sun, light, air circulation, privacy, ease of access, workflow and cosmic energies.

Bette Lighting, air circulation and workflow

Living Room Size and Direction

The living room should be directly connected to other rooms like the kitchen, bedroom, staircase and bathrooms for ease of access. In the living room, family members relax, watch TV, and talk to outsiders, so it should have good natural light and good air circulation from the large windows.

As a rule of thumb in engineering, it is recommended that for better lighting and ventilation, the window opening area should be more than 10% of the floor. According to Vastu Shastra, most windows should face north and east for better natural light from the morning sunlight. Morning sunlight is good for health as it heats the house and kills the bacteria and viruses that form at night.

Minimum ideal area for living room = 16 square meters or 170 square feet

According to Vastu Shastra the best orientation for the living room = Northeast (Ishanya = direction for health, energy and prosperity)

Bedroom Size and Direction

Family members use the bedrooms early in the morning for grooming but at other times they are used for resting, sleeping etc so the bedrooms should have direct sunlight and heat in the early morning and shade at other times.

Minimum area required for bedrooms = 12 square meters or 130 square feet

According to Vastu Shastra the best orientation for the bedroom = South direction (Dakshin Yama = direction of health, happiness, growth and female love). Avoid the northwest direction.

Avoid sleeping with your head facing north according to Vastu because the magnetic force of the earth can affect your brain and cause sleep disorders. Sleeping with head facing east direction will bring good memory, concentration and good health. Sleeping with head facing south direction will bring wealth, happiness and prosperity. Sleeping with head facing west direction will bring fame, reputation and prosperity.

Kitchen Room size and direction

The kitchen should be placed in the North-East or South-East location with windows facing East direction. It should be open and easily accessible from the living room and dining area to monitor the activities (watch over children) and engage in conversation.

Minimum room size required for kitchen = 8 square meters or 85 square feet

According to Vastu Shastra the best orientation for the kitchen = South-East direction with cooking faces east (Agneya or Agni mulai = Direction of health)

The next best directional placement is North-West direction(Vayavya or Vayu)

and last option is North-East Direction (Eshanya)

Bathrooms and Toilets

In bathrooms and toilets tall windows and ventilators should be provided facing the exterior of the building.

The minimum size required for the bathroom = 2.6 sq.m or 28 sq.ft

Minimum size for Toilet(W.C) = 2 sq.m or 22 sq.ft

Recommended size for bathroom + Toilet = 5.5 sq.m or 60 sq.ft

Placement, direction for Bathrooms and toilet according to Vastu Sastra = South-West (Nairuthya = for Longitivity)

Staircase

The area required for the staircase depends on the type and location of the staircase. Headroom size is also important.

Minimum width of steps = 1 m or 3 ft

Landing size = 1.2 m or 4 ft

Rise = 150 to 180 mm

Tread = 250 to 300

Placement, direction for staircase according to Vastu Sastra = South or South-West direction.

Other areas such as office room, prayer room, storeroom shall be designed based on its function.

Dimensions are usually drawn between the walls to specify room sizes and wall lengths. Floor plans may also include details of fixtures like sinks, water heaters, furnaces, etc. Floor plans may include notes for construction to specify finishes, construction methods, or symbols for electrical items.

How to decide column and beam size and placement of these?

    1. Placement depend on VARIOUS factors like layout of the building, type of the building etc.., For residential and also for most commercial building the width of column and beam is mostly restricted to 230 mm so that it wont be visible outside. width changes if the size of the wall changes, like if you use modular blocks like 300 or 150 width of the column may be 300 too. depth of the beam depends on the span and load transferred from the slab. Usual beam depth are 200, 230, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500, 550, 600. Column depth depends on the load from the beam, usual column depth are 230, 300, 350, 400, 450…. I have designed a building with column depth of freaking 900 last week. But for a general residential building with slab span not exceeding 3 to 4 meters and column span not exceeding 3 to 5 meters, depth of 230, 300 up 450 is enough.

    Hi Prakash,
This is Manjunath… I just need some clarity in the plan that I had casted… The plot is a south facing 30(South & North) X 60 (East and West) plot. I have left 8ft at the North which is the backyard and 2ft at the front near the road face. The master bedroom(SW) is 16x10ft. Attached Bath (5×5 ft), Another common Bath(4.5x5ft) and a small area for the external Wash Basin(3 x 5ft), Finally my Guest Bed in the NorthWest(10x10ft)… The above is the dimension from south to north on the SouthWest to NorthWest. In the NorthEast, A hall measuring (27ft X 11ft) and a Kitchen measuring (8x11ft) SouthWest… Since the sizes have evened out… Now the entrance is at the hall in the east direction roughly 12 ft away from the NorthEast. My issue here is if the Hall section is seen as 2 sections as a (11X10ft – NorthEast part) plus (16×11) feet near the Kitchen… I have arectangular space of the Hall as (14.5 or 15 X 16ft Hall section)… This is between the East and West(from the main door towards the Bedroom landing areas(the Bathroom walls)… Is this hall size fine…

    1. I understand your plan but I am not sure what your question is.

Sir how do we calculate the room size either length and width or length only?

    1. Room size does not depend on Vaastu. It depends on the activities you do in the room and the type of the room.
